GMB Phone Number Verification: How to Add, Verify and Fix It

You'd be surprised how many businesses have a Google My Business listing with no phone number on it. Or worse — the wrong one. And the owner has no idea.

We come across it regularly. Someone set up their profile a while back, things changed, and now there's a number on there that rings a line nobody answers — or nothing at all. Meanwhile, people searching for that business on Google just move on to someone else.

Getting your phone number right on your Google My Business (GMB) profile is one of those small things that genuinely matters. Not just for customers who want to call you, but for how Google sees your listing too. We'll get into all of that below — including what GMB phone number verification actually involves, how to do it, and what to do when it doesn't work the way it should.

Quick note:  Google officially renamed Google My Business to Google Business Profile back in 2021. Both names mean the same thing — you'll see both used here and across the web.

Why Your Phone Number on Google My Business Actually Matters

Let's start here, because it's worth being clear on why this isn't just admin.

When someone finds your business on Google — whether through a search or on Maps — your phone number is right there on the listing. On a phone, there's a tap-to-call button. That's a direct line from Google to you, no website visit needed. If that number's wrong, disconnected, or just not there, that call goes to a competitor instead.

There's also the local SEO side of things. Google pays attention to whether your business information is consistent across the internet — your website, your Google listing, local directories, and so on. The name, address, and phone number matching up across all those places is a signal that your business is legitimate and trustworthy. Inconsistencies, even small ones, can nudge your local rankings in the wrong direction.

None of this is complicated to fix. It just needs to be done properly.

How to Add Your Phone Number to Google My Business

If your number isn't on your listing yet — or you need to update it — here's how to do it.

Log in and find your profile

Go to business.google.com and sign in with the Google account tied to your listing. If you've got more than one business profile under the same account, just select the right one.

Get into the edit section

Click "Edit profile" from your dashboard. Scroll down to the contact section — that's where your phone number field sits.

Add or update the number

Click the edit icon next to the phone field, put in your number, and save. You can add a secondary number too if you want — some businesses use this for a mobile backup or a different department.

Worth saying:  Use the number people will actually get through on. A landline is fine if it's always answered. If not, a mobile that gets picked up is genuinely better than an office line that rings out half the time.

Wait for it to go live

Google usually updates the listing within a few hours. Sometimes it's quicker, occasionally it takes a day or two. You'll get a notification when it's published.

So What Is GMB Phone Number Verification?

Adding your number and verifying by phone are two different things — and it's easy to mix them up.

Adding a number is just putting your contact details on the listing. Most of the time, that's all you need to do.

Phone verification is when Google asks you to confirm your business is real by calling your number or texting you a code. It's part of verifying the listing itself — proving to Google that the business exists and that you're the right person managing it.

You'll usually only hit the phone verification step in a few situations:

  • You're setting up a brand-new listing and phone happens to be one of the verification options Google offers you

  • You're making major changes to an existing profile and Google wants to reconfirm things

  • Your listing lost its verified status for some reason

  • You're reinstating a listing that was suspended

What actually happens during phone verification

When you request it, Google will either call your listed number or send an SMS. Either way, you'll get a short verification code. You enter that code into your dashboard, and the listing gets confirmed as verified. The whole thing takes a few minutes — assuming the call or text comes through, which is where people sometimes run into problems.

When GMB Phone Verification Doesn't Work — And What to Do

Here are the issues we see come up most, and what actually helps.

The phone verification option isn't there

Google decides which verification methods are available to each business — and phone isn't always one of them. It depends on your business type, location, and a few other things Google doesn't fully spell out. If phone isn't showing as an option, you'll likely be offered postcard, video, or email instead. Just use whatever's available — they all get you to the same place.

The code never shows up

First thing to check: is the number in your profile actually correct? One wrong digit and the code goes nowhere. Also worth checking that your phone isn't blocking calls or texts from unknown numbers — Google's automated system often comes from a withheld or unfamiliar number.

VoIP lines and call-forwarding setups are another common culprit. Google's verification calls don't always work well with virtual phone systems. If you're on a VoIP number and nothing's coming through, try temporarily swapping in a standard mobile number just to get through the verification step, then switch it back.

The code arrived but now it's not working

It's expired. Verification codes have a short shelf life — if you didn't use it quickly enough, it's gone. Go back to your dashboard and request a new one. Fresh code, same process.

Someone else changed the number on your listing

Google allows users to suggest edits to business listings, including phone numbers. Usually these get reviewed, but sometimes things slip through. If your number's been changed without your knowledge, correct it straight away. Then turn on email notifications for your profile so you get an alert when someone suggests a change — that way you can approve or reject it before anything goes live.

You're a service-area business, and nothing works

Businesses that go to the customer — tradespeople, mobile services, that sort of thing — don't have a fixed premises, and that sometimes causes verification headaches. If you've tried everything and you're still stuck, contact Google Business Profile support directly. It's slow, but they can manually sort things out that the automated process won't.

A Few Things Worth Keeping in Mind

Once your numbers' on there and everything's verified, it doesn't need a lot of attention — but there are a handful of habits that are worth developing.

  • Update it the moment it changes. An outdated number on your listing will cost you calls. If your number changes, update Google the same day.

  • Match it to your website. The number on your Google listing and on your website's contact page should be identical — including the format. Even small differences can chip away at your local SEO.

  • Check in on your listing every so often. A quick look every couple of weeks is all it takes. Make sure your details are still as you left them.

  • Be careful with call tracking numbers. If you use a tracking number as your main GMB contact, it can create NAP inconsistencies across directories. It's not always a problem, but it's worth talking through with whoever manages your website.

The Phone Number Is One Part — The Bigger Picture Matters Too

Sorting your phone number out is a solid step. But it's worth being honest: a phone number on its own won't transform your Google visibility.

What actually makes a difference is having a listing that's fully verified, properly filled out, updated regularly, and picking up genuine reviews over time. That's when businesses start appearing consistently in Google Maps results and in those three local listings that show up near the top of search results — the ones that get the most clicks.

We've set up and optimised a lot of Google Business Profiles, and the impact a well-maintained listing has on enquiries is real. It's one of the few genuinely free tools that can directly affect how much business comes through the door — but only when it's actually set up properly.

If you're unsure whether your profile is in good shape, or you've been stuck in verification loops and just want someone to handle it, that's something we can help with.

Questions People Usually Have

Can I use a mobile number for GMB verification?

Yes. Google can send the verification SMS to any mobile number without issues. Just make sure the number is correct and that the phone can receive texts — some business mobiles have filtering turned on that blocks messages from unknown numbers.

The code arrived but it says it's invalid. Why?

It's expired. Codes don't last long. Head back to your dashboard and request a new one — it'll send a fresh code to the same number straight away.

Will I need to re-verify every time I change my phone number?

Not automatically, no. But if you change your number at the same time as making other significant edits to your profile, Google may prompt you to verify again. It doesn't always happen, but it's worth being prepared for it.

Can I list more than one phone number?

Yes — you can have a primary number and one or more additional numbers. The primary is what shows up most prominently in search results, so make that the main line you want customers to use.

Does my phone number affect my local search ranking?

Not directly on its own, no. But consistent NAP information — your name, address, and phone number matching up across your website, Google listing, and other directories — is an important local SEO signal. Getting it right contributes to how Google judges your listing's credibility.

Someone changed my phone number without my permission. What now?

Log in and fix it immediately. Then turn on profile notifications if you haven't already — you'll get an alert whenever anyone suggests a change, and you can review it before it goes through.

Is Google My Business the same as Google Business Profile?

Same platform, just rebranded. Google switched the name in 2021. You'll still hear people say Google My Business, GMB, or Google Business Profile — they all refer to the same thing.
